He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. Keeley started playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the violin and the guitar. Keeley attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied composition with Anthony Gilbert and John Casken. He also studied at the University of York, where he earned a Ph.D. in composition under the supervision of Nicola LeFanu. Keeley's music is characterized by its lyrical and expressive qualities, as well as its use of tonality and traditional forms. His works often explore themes of nature, spirituality, and human emotion. One of Keeley's early works is his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1984.
