Nunó also became involved in the creation of the Orfeó Català, a choral society that promoted Catalan music and culture. In 1850, Nunó moved to Mexico City, where he became the conductor of the Mexico City Opera. He also became involved in the political and cultural life of Mexico and was a supporter of the Mexican War of Independence. In 1854, he composed the music for the Mexican national anthem, "Himno Nacional Mexicano," which is still used today. Nunó's time in Mexico was a productive period for his music.
