In 1912, Montoya joined the flamenco troupe of singer Pastora Imperio. He traveled with the troupe throughout Spain and gained a following for his performances. Montoya's reputation as a flamenco guitarist continued to grow, and he soon became one of the most sought-after guitarists in Spain. Montoya's compositions were influenced by traditional flamenco music, but he also incorporated elements of classical music into his works. He was known for his use of complex harmonies and his ability to create intricate melodies. In 1922, Montoya traveled to Paris to perform at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts. His performances were well-received, and he gained a following in France.
