His family was Jewish, and he grew up in a religious household. From a young age, he showed a talent for music, and he began studying piano and composition at a local music school. In 1903, Zeitlin moved to St. Petersburg to study at the prestigious St. Petersburg Conservatory. There, he studied composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, one of the most famous composers of the time. Rimsky-Korsakov was known for his colorful orchestration and his use of folk melodies in his compositions, and these influences can be heard in Zeitlin's music as well. After graduating from the conservatory in 1908, Zeitlin began working as a composer and music teacher. He wrote music for the theater, including operas, ballets, and incidental music for plays. He also wrote orchestral works, chamber music, and songs. One of Zeitlin's most famous works is his opera "The Feast of Esther," which premiered in 1914. The opera tells the story of the Jewish holiday of Purim, and it features a large cast of characters and a complex plot. The music is colorful and dramatic, with influences from Russian and Jewish folk music. Another notable work by Zeitlin is his ballet "The Firebird," which premiered in 1915. The ballet is based on a Russian fairy tale about a magical bird that can bring happiness and good fortune. Zeitlin's music for the ballet is lush and romantic, with soaring melodies and colorful orchestration. Zeitlin's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his generation in Russia. However, his career was cut short by his untimely death in 1930 at the age of 46.
