Laura Sarti was a renowned mezzo-soprano and vocal coach who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on 13th June 1924 in London, England, Sarti was the daughter of an Italian father and an English mother. Her father was a professional singer, and her mother was a pianist. Sarti grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a young age. Sarti began her musical training at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied piano and singing. She later continued her studies in Italy, where she worked with the famous Italian soprano, Toti dal Monte. Sarti's talent as a singer was evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional vocal abilities. Sarti made her professional debut in 1948, singing the role of Cherubino in Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, at the Glyndebourne Festival. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in the world of classical music. Over the years, Sarti performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. One of Sarti's most significant achievements was her portrayal of the title role in Rossini's opera, La Cenerentola. Her performance in this role was widely acclaimed, and it helped to establish her as one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation. Sarti also had a particular affinity for the music of Mozart, and she performed many of his operas throughout her career. In addition to her work as a performer, Sarti was also a highly respected vocal coach. She taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York, among other institutions. Sarti was known for her ability to bring out the best in her students, and many of them went on to have successful careers in the world of classical music. Sarti received many awards and honors throughout her career, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Queen's Medal for Music. She was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her services to music. Sarti continued to perform and teach well into her later years, and she remained an active and influential figure in the world of classical music until her death on 19th October 2016. Her legacy lives on through the many students she taught and the recordings of her performances that continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
