He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Karl Hummel, was a well-known music educator and composer, and his mother, Maria Hummel, was a pianist. Bertold Hummel began his musical education at a young age, studying piano, violin, and composition with his father. Hummel studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich from 1946 to 1950, where he studied composition with Joseph Haas and conducting with Georg Ludwig Jochum. After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance composer and conductor, and also taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg. Hummel's early works were influenced by the music of Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg, but he later developed his own style, which was characterized by a blend of tonal and atonal elements. His music is often characterized by its clarity of form and structure, and its use of traditional forms such as the sonata and the fugue. Hummel's most famous works include his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered in 1957 and won the Bavarian State Prize for Music in 1958. He also wrote a number of chamber music works, including string quartets, piano trios, and sonatas for various instruments. His music has been performed by many leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a composer, Hummel was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg from 1957 to 1990, and also served as the school's director from 1972 to 1980. He was known for his innovative teaching methods, and was a strong advocate for the integration of new technologies into music education. Hummel was also a prolific writer, and published a number of books on music theory and composition. His most famous book, "The New Music: A Guide to Contemporary Composers," was published in 1966 and became a standard reference work for music students and professionals. Hummel continued to compose and teach until his death on May 9, 2002, in Würzburg, Germany. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music, and is remembered as one of the most important composers and educators of his generation.More....
