He was born on August 22, 1921, in New York City, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Geis showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Geis received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher Rosina Lhévinne. He graduated from Juilliard in 1942 with a Bachelor of Music degree. After graduation, Geis continued his studies with Lhévinne and also studied with pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Geis made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic in 1943, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The performance was a huge success, and Geis received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing. This performance launched Geis's career as a concert pianist, and he went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Geis was known for his technical brilliance and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Liszt. Geis's performances were characterized by his powerful and expressive playing, which captivated audiences around the world. Geis received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1950, he won the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition, which helped to establish his reputation as one of the world's leading pianists. He was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, which is awarded to outstanding classical musicians in the United States.
