The Karlsruher Hornquartett is a classical music ensemble that specializes in horn music. The quartet was founded in 1981 in Karlsruhe, Germany, by four horn players who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of horn quartets. The founding members of the Karlsruher Hornquartett were Wolfgang Gaag, Wolfgang Schmitt, Hans-Peter Stenzl, and Wolfgang Wipfler. All four musicians were trained at the Karlsruhe University of Music, and had extensive experience playing in orchestras and chamber ensembles. From the beginning, the Karlsruher Hornquartett set out to establish itself as a leading ensemble in the world of horn music. The quartet's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. Over the years, the Karlsruher Hornquartett has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. The quartet has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, and has collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. One of the highlights of the Karlsruher Hornquartett's career was its performance at the 1994 Salzburg Festival. The quartet was invited to perform as part of the festival's "Chamber Music in the Great Hall" series, and received rave reviews for its performance of Mozart's Horn Quintet in E-flat major. In addition to its performances, the Karlsruher Hornquartett has also been recognized for its recordings. The quartet has released several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Ligeti's Horn Trio and Horn Concerto. The current members of the Karlsruher Hornquartett are Wolfgang Gaag, Wolfgang Schmitt, Hans-Peter Stenzl, and Markus Maskuniitty. Maskuniitty joined the quartet in 2015, following the retirement of Wolfgang Wipfler. Despite changes in personnel, the Karlsruher Hornquartett remains committed to its mission of promoting the rich and varied repertoire of horn music. The quartet continues to perform regularly, and is widely regarded as one of the world's leading ensembles in its field.
