Jaro Schmied was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1923, in Vienna, Austria. He was the son of a famous conductor and composer, Franz Schmied, who was the director of the Vienna State Opera. Jaro grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. He started playing the piano when he was just four years old and showed exceptional talent from the beginning. Jaro's father recognized his son's talent and started giving him piano lessons at a very young age. He was a strict teacher and demanded perfection from his son. Jaro's hard work and dedication paid off, and he soon became a prodigy. He gave his first public performance when he was just six years old and received a standing ovation from the audience. Jaro continued to study music under his father's guidance and also attended the Vienna Conservatory. He studied piano, composition, and conducting and graduated with top honors. He then went on to study at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where he studied under the famous pianist and conductor, Wilhelm Furtwängler. Jaro's career as a pianist took off when he won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1949. He was only 26 years old at the time and was the youngest pianist to win the competition. This victory launched his career and he soon became one of the most sought-after pianists in the world. Jaro's performances were known for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He had a unique ability to connect with his audience and his performances were always highly praised. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Jaro's most memorable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the Emperor Concerto. He performed this piece with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1955 and received a standing ovation from the audience. His performance was later released as a recording and became one of the best-selling classical music albums of all time. Jaro also had a successful career as a conductor. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras and was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was the principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1960 to 1970 and also conducted the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Jaro received many awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1965 and was made an honorary citizen of Vienna in 1973. He was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1983. Jaro continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s. He gave his last performance in 2005, at the age of 82. He passed away on January 6, 2006, at the age of 82. Jaro Schmied was a true musical genius who left a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
