Davide Perez was a prominent Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in Naples on June 9, 1711. He was the son of Francesco Perez, a Spanish musician who served as the maestro di cappella at the Royal Chapel in Naples. Davide Perez grew up in a musical family and received his early musical education from his father. At the age of 16, Perez began his professional career as a composer and was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Royal Chapel in Naples. He held this position for several years and composed a number of sacred works for the chapel, including masses, motets, and psalms. In 1738, Perez moved to Madrid, where he was appointed as the maestro di cappella at the Royal Chapel. He remained in this position for over 20 years and composed a number of operas, oratorios, and other works for the royal court. During this time, he also became a prominent figure in the musical life of Madrid and was highly regarded by his contemporaries. One of Perez's most famous works is his opera "Solimano," which was first performed in Madrid in 1755. The opera tells the story of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his love for the Venetian noblewoman Rossane. The opera was a great success and was performed throughout Europe, including in Paris, Vienna, and London. Perez's other notable works include his oratorio "Il martirio di San Lorenzo," which was first performed in Naples in 1735, and his opera "Annibale in Capua," which was first performed in Madrid in 1750. He also composed a number of chamber music works, including sonatas and trios. Perez was known for his innovative use of harmony and his ability to blend Italian and Spanish musical styles. His music was highly expressive and emotional, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. In addition to his work as a composer, Perez was also a respected music teacher and mentor. He taught a number of prominent musicians, including the Spanish composer Luigi Boccherini. Perez died in Madrid on August 30, 1778, at the age of 67. His legacy as a composer and teacher continues to be celebrated today, and his music remains an important part of the Baroque repertoire.
