Jean Schils was a renowned classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1929, in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist, which meant that Jean was exposed to music from a very young age. Jean's parents recognized her talent for music early on, and they encouraged her to pursue it. She began playing the piano at the age of four and started taking lessons from her mother. By the time she was six, she had already given her first public performance. Jean's talent for music continued to grow, and she began studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels when she was just eight years old. She studied piano, harmony, and counterpoint, and she quickly became one of the top students in her class. In 1940, when Jean was just 11 years old, her family was forced to flee Belgium due to the German occupation. They moved to France, where Jean continued her studies at the Conservatoire de Paris. She studied with some of the most renowned teachers of the time, including Marguerite Long and Alfred Cortot. Jean's talent for music continued to flourish, and she began performing in concerts throughout Europe. She won several awards and competitions, including the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in 1950 and the Geneva International Music Competition in 1952. In 1953, Jean made her debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of Jean's international career. Over the next few years, Jean continued to perform in concerts throughout Europe and the United States. She played with some of the most renowned orchestras of the time, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Jean's career was her performance at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. She played a solo recital in front of a crowd of over 10,000 people, and her performance was broadcast on television throughout Europe. Jean's talent for music was not limited to the piano. She was also an accomplished composer, and she wrote several pieces for piano and orchestra. Her compositions were well-received, and they were performed by orchestras throughout Europe. In addition to her performances and compositions, Jean was also a dedicated teacher. She taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels for many years, and she had a profound impact on her students. Many of her students went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Jean continued to perform and teach until the end of her life. She passed away on December 23, 1998, at the age of 69. Her legacy as a musician and teacher lives on, and she is remembered as one of the greatest classical music artists of the 20th century.
