Mirela Ivičević is a Croatian composer who has gained international recognition for her innovative and experimental approach to classical music. Born in Split, Croatia in 1980, Ivičević grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a composer, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Ivičević began her formal music education at the age of six, studying piano and music theory at the Music School in Split. She later attended the Zagreb Academy of Music, where she studied composition with Dubravko Detoni and Zoran Jurković. During her time at the academy, Ivičević was awarded several prizes for her compositions, including the Josip Štolcer Slavenski Prize and the Boris Papandopulo Prize. After completing her studies, Ivičević began to establish herself as a composer, working with a variety of ensembles and performers in Croatia and beyond. Her early works were characterized by a focus on traditional forms and techniques, but she soon began to experiment with new sounds and approaches to composition. One of Ivičević's most notable works is her 2014 composition "Baby Magnify/Lilith's New Toy," which was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The piece is a multimedia work that combines live performance with electronic music and video projections, and explores themes of gender and identity. Another significant work by Ivičević is her 2016 composition "HARDWARE," which was commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and premiered at the festival that year. The piece is a collaboration with the artist David McLeavy, and features a live performance by the ensemble Plus-Minus alongside a video projection of McLeavy's artwork. Ivičević's music is known for its use of unconventional sounds and techniques, as well as its incorporation of multimedia elements. In addition to her work as a composer, Ivičević is also an active performer and curator.
