He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Quinto Cariaggi, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, Maria Luisa Soffici, was a pianist and music teacher. Piero showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. In 1943, during World War II, Piero was drafted into the Italian army and served as a medic. After the war, he resumed his musical studies and in 1947, he graduated from the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence with a degree in composition. He then went on to study conducting with Carlo Maria Giulini and Franco Ferrara. In the early 1950s, Piero began his career as a conductor, leading orchestras in Italy and abroad. He also worked as a composer, writing music for film, television, and the theater. His first major success came in 1955 with the premiere of his opera "La Fiera di San Giovanni" at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. The opera was well-received and established Piero as a rising star in the world of classical music. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Piero continued to compose and conduct, producing a wide range of works in various genres. He wrote symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and vocal music, as well as music for ballet and opera. His music was characterized by its lyricism, emotional depth, and technical mastery. One of Piero's most famous works is his "Concerto per violino e orchestra" (Concerto for Violin and Orchestra), which was premiered in 1962 by the violinist Salvatore Accardo. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo violin, with a lush and expressive orchestral accompaniment. It has since become a staple of the violin repertoire and is widely regarded as one of Piero's finest works. Another notable work by Piero is his "Sinfonia per archi" (Symphony for Strings), which was premiered in 1965 by the I Musici chamber orchestra. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work, with a rich and complex harmonic language. It has been praised for its beauty and depth of feeling, and is considered one of Piero's most important contributions to the string orchestra repertoire. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Piero was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence for many years, and his students included some of Italy's most prominent musicians. Piero continued to compose and conduct well into his later years, and his music remained popular and influential.
