Kroke is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1992 in Krakow, Poland. The group consists of three main members: Tomasz Kukurba on viola and vocals, Jerzy Bawoł on accordion, and Tomasz Lato on double bass. The ensemble's name comes from the Yiddish word "kroke," which means "Krakow." Kroke's music is a fusion of classical, jazz, and traditional Jewish music. The group's sound is characterized by its use of traditional Jewish instruments, such as the violin and accordion, and its incorporation of modern elements, such as electronic beats and samples. The ensemble's founding members, Tomasz Kukurba and Jerzy Bawoł, met while studying at the Academy of Music in Krakow. They began playing together in various jazz and rock bands before forming Kroke in 1992. The group's original lineup also included percussionist Tomasz Grochot and bassist Jacek Ostaszewski. Kroke's early performances were mainly in small clubs and cafes in Krakow. However, the group quickly gained a following and began performing at larger venues throughout Poland and Europe. In 1996, Kroke released its debut album, "Kroke," which was well-received by critics and helped to establish the group's reputation as a unique and innovative ensemble. Over the years, Kroke has released numerous albums and collaborated with a variety of musicians from around the world. The group's music has been featured in films, television shows, and theater productions, and has been used in dance performances and other artistic projects. One of Kroke's most notable performances was at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where the group received critical acclaim for its performance of "The Sounds of the Vanishing World." The show, which was a tribute to the Jewish culture of Eastern Europe, featured traditional Jewish music and dance, as well as original compositions by Kroke. In addition to its performances, Kroke has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. The group has won several Polish music awards, including the Fryderyk Award for Best World Music Album in 2003 and 2004. Kroke has also been nominated for several international awards, including the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award and the German Record Critics' Award. Despite its success, Kroke remains committed to its roots and continues to draw inspiration from the traditional Jewish music of Eastern Europe. The group's music is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating this heritage for future generations.
