The Wind Symphony is made up of approximately 50 talented musicians, all of whom are students at Ohio State University. The ensemble is led by Dr. Russel C. Mikkelson, who has been the director of the Wind Symphony since 2004. Dr. Mikkelson is a highly respected conductor and composer, and has led the ensemble to numerous accolades and awards over the years. One of the highlights of the Wind Symphony's history was its performance at the 1992 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The Midwest Clinic is one of the largest and most prestigious music conferences in the world, and the Wind Symphony's performance was widely regarded as one of the best in the conference's history. The ensemble's performance was so well-received that it was later released as a CD, which received critical acclaim and helped to further establish the Wind Symphony's reputation as one of the best wind ensembles in the world. In addition to its performance at the Midwest Clinic, the Wind Symphony has also performed at numerous other prestigious venues and events over the years. These include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the College Band Directors National Association Conference, among others. The ensemble has also collaborated with numerous renowned composers and conductors, including John Corigliano, Michael Daugherty, and H. Robert Reynolds. The Wind Symphony has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2011, the ensemble was awarded the Sudler Trophy, which is widely regarded as the most prestigious award for wind ensembles in the world. The Sudler Trophy is awarded biannually to a wind ensemble that has demonstrated the highest level of excellence in performance and has made significant contributions to the advancement of wind music. In addition to the Sudler Trophy, the Wind Symphony has also been the recipient of numerous other awards and honors. These include multiple invitations to perform at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference, as well as numerous awards from the National Band Association and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
