Hoodlebug Brass is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The group is composed of five members who play various brass instruments, including trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba. The ensemble has gained a reputation for its unique sound and dynamic performances, which have earned it numerous awards and accolades over the years. The founding members of Hoodlebug Brass were all music educators at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). They came together with the goal of creating a brass ensemble that would showcase the talents of the university's music faculty and provide a platform for them to perform together. The group took its name from the Hoodlebug Trail, a local railway line that was once used to transport coal and other goods in the region. The original members of Hoodlebug Brass were Dr. Kevin Eisensmith (trumpet), Dr. Jack Stamp (tuba), Dr. Christian Dickinson (trombone), Dr. David Ferguson (French horn), and Dr. Gary Bird (trumpet). All five members were accomplished musicians in their own right, with extensive experience performing and teaching in the field of classical music. Since its founding, Hoodlebug Brass has performed at numerous venues and events throughout the United States and abroad. The group has been featured at music festivals, concert series, and other cultural events, and has collaborated with a wide range of other musicians and ensembles. One of the highlights of Hoodlebug Brass's career was its performance at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 1994. The group was invited to perform at the conference, which is one of the largest gatherings of trumpet players in the world. The performance was well-received by the audience and helped to raise the group's profile in the classical music community. Another notable performance by Hoodlebug Brass was its appearance at the 2002 Midwest Clinic, an annual music conference held in Chicago. The group was one of only a handful of brass ensembles selected to perform at the conference, which attracts thousands of music educators and performers from around the world. The performance was a great success, and helped to cement Hoodlebug Brass's reputation as one of the premier brass ensembles in the country. Over the years, Hoodlebug Brass has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. The group has won several competitions and has been featured on several recordings, including its own album, "Hoodlebug Brass Live!" The group has also been featured on several radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and PBS's "In Performance at the White House." In addition to its performances and recordings, Hoodlebug Brass is also committed to music education and outreach. The group has conducted master classes and workshops for students of all ages, and has worked with numerous schools and community organizations to promote the importance of music education. The group's members are all experienced educators and are passionate about sharing their love of music with others. Today, Hoodlebug Brass continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and admired brass ensembles in the world of classical music. The group's unique sound and dynamic performances have earned it a loyal following of fans and admirers, and its commitment to music education and outreach ensures that its legacy will continue for many years to come.
