Calvert Johnson is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born in 1951 in Atlanta, Georgia, Johnson showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the cello and began studying under the tutelage of renowned cellist Martha Gerchefski. Johnson's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became a sought-after performer. He went on to study at the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. He then pursued further studies at the University of Illinois, where he earned a Master of Music degree in cello performance. Throughout his career, Johnson has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. He has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a performer, Johnson is also a respected music educator. He has taught at the University of Georgia, the University of Illinois, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also served as a guest lecturer and clinician at numerous universities and music schools throughout the United States. One of the highlights of Johnson's career was his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it cemented Johnson's reputation as one of the finest cellists of his generation. Johnson has also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was a recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise.
