John Elmquist was born on May 12, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical violinist. From a young age, Elmquist showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Elmquist's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with a local teacher and quickly progressed. By the age of ten, he was already performing in local concerts and competitions. In 1997, Elmquist was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2001.
