Born in Helsinki in 1981, Vihavainen began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the instrument. She went on to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in cello performance. Throughout her career, Vihavainen has been recognized for her exceptional talent and has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2003, she won first prize in the Turku Cello Competition, and in 2005, she was awarded the prestigious Pro Musica Foundation Prize. She has also been a finalist in several other international competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Pablo Casals Competition in France. Vihavainen has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber ensembles. She has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 2008, she was invited to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, where she played alongside artists such as Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. One of Vihavainen's most notable performances was her debut with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, where she played the Elgar Cello Concerto to critical acclaim. She has also performed with other major orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her performing career, Vihavainen is also a dedicated teacher and has taught at several music schools and conservatories.
