Robert Stehli was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on August 22, 1922, in Zurich, Switzerland. Stehli was the son of a prominent Swiss conductor, and his father's passion for music inspired him to pursue a career in the field. Stehli began his musical training at a young age, studying piano and violin. He showed exceptional talent and quickly became a prodigy. At the age of 12, he made his debut as a soloist with the Zurich Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Stehli continued his studies at the Zurich Conservatory, where he received a diploma in piano performance. He then went on to study with renowned pianists such as Edwin Fischer and Walter Gieseking. Stehli's dedication to his craft paid off, and he soon gained recognition as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. In 1949, Stehli made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Artur Rodzinski. The performance was a resounding success, and Stehli quickly became a sought-after soloist, performing with orchestras across the country. Stehli's career continued to flourish throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the leading conductors of the time, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and George Szell. One of the highlights of Stehli's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, "Emperor," with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Fritz Reiner. The performance was recorded and released on RCA Victor, and it remains one of the most celebrated recordings of the concerto to this day. Stehli was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded a wide range of repertoire throughout his career. His recordings of the complete piano works of Mozart and Beethoven are particularly noteworthy, and they continue to be regarded as some of the finest interpretations of these works. In addition to his performing and recording career, Stehli was also a dedicated teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School in New York City and the University of Michigan, where he was a professor of piano for many years. He also gave masterclasses around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with the next generation of musicians. Stehli's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972, and he received the Swiss Music Prize in 1982. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Robert Stehli passed away on December 31, 1997, at the age of 75. His legacy as a musician and teacher continues to inspire generations of musicians around the world.
