David Bendix Nielsen is a Danish classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a conductor, pianist, and composer. Born on August 28, 1976, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Nielsen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received his diploma in piano performance in 2001. Nielsen's career as a musician began to take off in the early 2000s, when he began performing as a solo pianist and collaborating with other musicians. In 2003, he won the prestigious Danish Radio P2 Talent Prize, which helped to raise his profile in Denmark and beyond. He went on to perform at major venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salzburg Festival. In addition to his work as a pianist, Nielsen also began to establish himself as a conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2013, and has also conducted the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Danish Orchestra, and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has been praised for his ability to bring out the best in orchestras and for his innovative programming, which often includes lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. Nielsen's talents as a composer have also been recognized, and he has written works for a variety of ensembles and soloists. His compositions have been performed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and the Esbjerg Ensemble, among others. He has also collaborated with other artists, including the Danish poet Morten Søndergaard, on multimedia projects that combine music, poetry, and visual art. One of Nielsen's most notable performances as a pianist came in 2010, when he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The performance was recorded and released on DVD, and received critical acclaim for Nielsen's virtuosic playing and the orchestra's sensitive accompaniment. Nielsen has also recorded several solo piano albums, including a collection of works by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (no relation). In 2014, Nielsen was appointed the principal conductor of the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2019. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in a wide range of repertoire, from classical works to contemporary pieces. He also worked to engage audiences through innovative programming and outreach initiatives, including a series of concerts for children and families. Nielsen has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Foundation's Music Prize in 2011 and the Danish Composers' Society's Composer of the Year award in 2013. He has also been a frequent guest on Danish radio and television programs, where he has discussed his work as a musician and composer. Today, Nielsen continues to perform, conduct, and compose music, and is widely regarded as one of Denmark's most talented and versatile classical musicians. His passion for music and commitment to excellence have earned him a devoted following and a place among the leading artists of his generation.
