William Matthews was an American composer who was born on November 17, 1942, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Matthews began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1964. After completing his studies, Matthews began his career as a composer, writing music for a variety of ensembles and genres. He was known for his unique style, which blended elements of classical music with jazz and rock influences. Matthews was also a prolific writer, producing a large body of work over the course of his career. One of Matthews' early works was his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1965. The piece was well-received and helped establish Matthews as a rising talent in the classical music world. He went on to write several more string quartets, including his String Quartet No. 2, which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet in 1988. In addition to his work as a composer, Matthews was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania and the Eastman School of Music. Matthews was known for his innovative teaching methods, which emphasized the importance of improvisation and experimentation in music. Matthews' music was often inspired by his personal experiences and the world around him. One of his most famous works, his Symphony No. 1, was written in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The piece was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2002 and received critical acclaim for its emotional depth and powerful message. Another notable work by Matthews was his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra in 1993. The piece was written for violinist Joshua Bell and showcased Matthews' ability to blend classical and contemporary styles. The concerto was praised for its virtuosic solo passages and intricate orchestration. Matthews continued to write music throughout his career, even as he battled health issues in his later years. He passed away on October 21, 1998, at the age of 55. Despite his relatively short career, Matthews left a lasting impact on the classical music world, and his music continues to be performed and celebrated today.
