He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Borboudakis started playing the piano at the age of six and later studied music theory and composition at the Athens Conservatory. In 1995, Borboudakis moved to Germany to continue his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. He studied composition with Jan Müller-Wieland and later with Hans-Jürgen von Bose. During his studies, Borboudakis also attended masterclasses with renowned composers such as György Ligeti, Helmut Lachenmann, and Wolfgang Rihm. Borboudakis' early works were influenced by the Greek traditional music he grew up with, as well as by the contemporary music he was exposed to during his studies in Germany. His music is characterized by a unique blend of different musical traditions, as well as by a strong interest in the use of technology in music composition. One of Borboudakis' early works is his "String Quartet No. 1," which he composed in 1999. The piece is a tribute to the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas and is based on a theme from Skalkottas' "36 Greek Dances." Borboudakis' quartet is a modern interpretation of the traditional Greek dances, with complex rhythms and harmonies that reflect the composer's interest in contemporary music. In 2002, Borboudakis composed "Klangspuren," a piece for orchestra and electronics. The work was commissioned by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and was premiered at the Munich Biennale. "Klangspuren" is a complex and multi-layered composition that combines acoustic and electronic sounds. The piece explores the relationship between sound and space, with the orchestra and electronics creating a sonic landscape that immerses the listener in a world of sound. Borboudakis' interest in technology is also evident in his "Concerto for Piano and Electronics," which he composed in 2006. The piece was commissioned by the Munich Chamber Orchestra and was premiered by pianist Tamara Stefanovich. The concerto is a virtuosic work that showcases the pianist's technical skills, while also exploring the possibilities of electronic sound manipulation. In 2010, Borboudakis composed "Aegean," a piece for string orchestra that was inspired by the landscape and culture of the Aegean Sea. The work was commissioned by the Athens State Orchestra and was premiered at the Megaron Concert Hall in Athens. "Aegean" is a lyrical and evocative composition that captures the beauty and mystery of the Aegean Sea. Borboudakis' most recent work is "The Daughters of Ocean," a multimedia opera that was premiered in 2019 at the Munich Biennale. The opera is based on the myth of the Sirens and explores themes of desire, power, and transformation. The work combines live performance with video projections and electronic soundscapes, creating a multi-sensory experience that blurs the boundaries between music, theater, and visual art. Borboudakis' music has been performed by leading orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Athens State Orchestra, and the Ensemble Modern. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Bavarian State Prize for Music in 2008 and the Ernst von Siemens Composer's Prize in 2012.More....
