The Illinois State University Wind Symphony Chamber Winds is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1969. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented musicians from the Illinois State University School of Music. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Dan Dietrich, who was the director of bands at Illinois State University at the time. Dr. Dietrich had a vision of creating a chamber wind ensemble that would showcase the talents of the university's top musicians. He handpicked the members of the ensemble and worked tirelessly to ensure that they were able to perform at the highest level. The main members of the Illinois State University Wind Symphony Chamber Winds are the musicians themselves. The ensemble is made up of a variety of wind and percussion instruments, including flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, euphoniums, tubas, and percussion. Each member of the ensemble is a highly skilled musician who has been selected through a rigorous audition process. Over the years, the Illinois State University Wind Symphony Chamber Winds has performed at numerous concerts and events. Some of the highlights of their performances include their appearances at the Illinois Music Educators Association Conference, the College Band Directors National Association Conference, and the Midwest Clinic. The ensemble has also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and has toured internationally in countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea. In 1993, the ensemble won the prestigious Sudler Chamber Music Award, which is given to the top chamber music ensemble in the United States. The ensemble has also won the National Wind Band Honors Award, the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Flag of Honor, and the American Prize in Chamber Music. In addition to their performances and awards, the Illinois State University Wind Symphony Chamber Winds is also known for their commitment to education. The ensemble regularly works with high school and middle school students, providing them with the opportunity to learn from some of the top musicians in the country.
