The orchestra was founded in 1973 by a group of local musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to bring it to their community. The founding members of the orchestra included conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama, who served as the orchestra's first music director, and violinist Takako Nishizaki, who later became the orchestra's concertmaster. The orchestra started with just 30 members, but over the years it has grown to become one of the most respected orchestras in Japan, with over 90 members. The Gunma Symphony Orchestra has performed all over Japan and has also toured internationally, including performances in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned conductors and soloists, including Seiji Ozawa, Yo-Yo Ma, and Midori. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. The orchestra was chosen to perform at the opening ceremony, which was watched by millions of people around the world. The orchestra played a piece by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, which was specially commissioned for the occasion. In 1994, the orchestra won the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Music Competition, which is one of the most prestigious music competitions in Japan. The orchestra's current music director is Tatsuya Shimono, who took over the position in 2016. In addition to its regular concert series, the Gunma Symphony Orchestra is also involved in many educational and outreach programs.
