Eddie Barclay was a French record producer and founder of the Barclay Records label. He was born on January 16, 1921, in Paris, France. His birth name was Edouard Ruault, but he later changed it to Eddie Barclay. He was the son of a café owner and grew up in a musical family. His father played the accordion, and his mother was a singer. Barclay started his career in the music industry as a pianist and played in various nightclubs in Paris. He later became a talent scout for the Polydor label and discovered many French artists, including Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel. In 1953, he founded his own record label, Barclay Records, which became one of the most successful labels in France. Barclay was known for his ability to spot talent and his keen business sense. He signed many successful artists to his label, including Dalida, Johnny Hallyday, and Claude Nougaro. He also produced albums for international artists such as Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Duke Ellington. One of Barclay's most significant achievements was his role in promoting French chanson music. He also played a key role in the development of the yé-yé movement, which was a style of pop music that emerged in France in the 1960s. Barclay was a prolific producer and released over 3,000 albums during his career. He was also a successful businessman and owned several nightclubs and restaurants in Paris. He was known for his flamboyant personality and his love of luxury. Barclay received many awards and honors during his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Legion of Honor, which is the highest award in France. He was also inducted into the French Music Hall of Fame in 2003. Barclay died on May 13, 2005, at the age of 84. He left behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in the French music industry.
