The Dresdner Sinfoniker is a classical music ensemble based in Dresden, Germany. Founded in 1997, the ensemble has gained international recognition for its innovative programming and commitment to social and political issues. The founding members of the Dresdner Sinfoniker were a group of young musicians who were interested in exploring new ways of presenting classical music. They were inspired by the idea of using music as a means of promoting social and political change, and sought to create a platform for dialogue and engagement through their performances. Over the years, the ensemble has grown in size and scope, and now includes over 60 musicians from around the world. The core members of the ensemble are conductor Markus Rindt, concertmaster Jörg Faßmann, and principal cellist Matthias Moosdorf. One of the defining features of the Dresdner Sinfoniker is their commitment to exploring the intersection of music and politics. They have tackled a wide range of social and political issues in their performances, including climate change, migration, and human rights. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 2016 concert "Aghet", which commemorated the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The concert featured a multimedia presentation that combined music, film, and spoken word to tell the story of the genocide and its aftermath. The performance was widely praised for its powerful and moving portrayal of this tragic event. In addition to their social and political engagement, the Dresdner Sinfoniker are also known for their innovative programming and collaborations. They have worked with a wide range of artists and musicians, including jazz pianist Uri Caine, composer and conductor John Adams, and singer-songwriter Patti Smith. One of the ensemble's most ambitious projects was their 2018 album "Symphonic Mob", which featured a collaboration with over 1,000 amateur musicians from across Germany. The album was recorded live in Dresden's historic city center, and featured a wide range of musical styles and genres. The Dresdner Sinfoniker have received numerous awards and accolades for their work, including the German Record Critics' Award, the Echo Klassik Award, and the European Cultural Prize. They have also been recognized for their commitment to social and political engagement, receiving the German Federal Cross of Merit in 2017. Despite their many achievements, the Dresdner Sinfoniker remain committed to their original vision of using music as a means of promoting social and political change. They continue to push the boundaries of classical music, and to engage with audiences in new and innovative ways.
