Cornelis Thymanszoon Padbrué was a Dutch composer and musician who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in Rotterdam in 1592, and little is known about his early life and education. However, it is believed that he received his musical training in the Netherlands, possibly in Amsterdam or Utrecht. Padbrué began his career as a musician in the early 17th century, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled composer and performer. He was appointed as the organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam in 1617, and he held this position for over 40 years. During this time, he also served as the organist of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam and the St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. Padbrué was a prolific composer, and he wrote music in a variety of genres, including sacred music, secular vocal music, and instrumental music. His works were highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time in the Netherlands. One of Padbrué's most famous works is his collection of psalm settings, which he published in 1626 under the title "Pseaumes de David, mis en musique à quatre parties." This collection includes 150 settings of the psalms, each of which is set for four voices. The collection was highly influential, and it was widely used in Dutch churches for many years. In addition to his psalm settings, Padbrué also wrote a number of other sacred works, including motets, hymns, and Mass settings. His sacred music is characterized by its simple, straightforward style, which emphasizes the text and the clarity of the vocal lines. Padbrué also wrote a significant amount of secular vocal music, including madrigals, chansons, and songs. His secular music is notable for its lively rhythms and catchy melodies, which were popular with audiences of the time. In addition to his vocal music, Padbrué also wrote a number of instrumental works, including keyboard music and chamber music. His keyboard music includes a collection of dances, which were popular in the Netherlands during the 17th century. His chamber music includes a collection of sonatas for various instruments, including violin, viola da gamba, and recorder. Padbrué's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and it continued to be performed and admired in the centuries that followed. However, his reputation declined somewhat in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as his music was overshadowed by the works of more famous composers such as Bach and Handel. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed interest in Padbrué's music, and his works have been recorded and performed by a number of ensembles and soloists. His music is now recognized as an important part of the Dutch Baroque repertoire, and it continues to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
