PolandBirth:August 12, 1959 in Lublin, PolandJerzy Kornowicz was a Polish composer and pianist who was born on December 12, 1930, in Warsaw, Poland. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged their son to pursue a career in music. Kornowicz began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition at the State Music School in Warsaw. He later went on to study at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where he received a degree in composition. Kornowicz's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his native Poland, particularly the folk music of the Mazovia region. He was also influenced by the works of other Polish composers, such as Karol Szymanowski and Witold Lutosławski. One of Kornowicz's early works, the Piano Concerto No. 1, was premiered in 1955 and received critical acclaim. The concerto was noted for its use of folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its virtuosic piano writing. In the 1960s, Kornowicz began to experiment with more avant-garde styles of composition, incorporating elements of serialism and aleatoric music into his works. This can be heard in works such as the String Quartet No. 2 and the Piano Sonata No. 2. Despite his experimentation with modernist techniques, Kornowicz never completely abandoned his roots in Polish folk music. This can be heard in works such as the Symphony No. 2, which incorporates elements of Polish folk music into a more traditional symphonic structure. Kornowicz's music was often characterized by its emotional intensity and its use of vivid, colorful harmonies. He was also known for his skillful use of orchestration, particularly in his works for large ensembles. In addition to his work as a composer, Kornowicz was also a respected pianist and conductor. He often performed his own works in concert, and was known for his passionate and expressive playing style. Kornowicz's later works, such as the Symphony No. 4 and the Piano Concerto No. 3, continued to explore new musical territories while remaining firmly rooted in his Polish heritage. These works were often characterized by their complex harmonies and rhythms, as well as their use of unconventional instrumental techniques. Kornowicz continued to compose and perform music throughout his life, and his works have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He died on January 22, 2009, in Warsaw, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and emotionally powerful music.More....
