Ensemble Reflektor is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music. The ensemble is based in Berlin, Germany, and is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music. The founding members of Ensemble Reflektor were pianist and composer Matthias Pintscher, violinist Daniel Hope, and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. They were later joined by clarinetist and composer Jörg Widmann, percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, and pianist Tamara Stefanovich. The ensemble's name, Reflektor, is a reference to the idea of reflecting and refracting sound, as well as the idea of reflecting on the past while looking towards the future. Ensemble Reflektor's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers such as György Ligeti, Pierre Boulez, and Helmut Lachenmann, as well as new works commissioned specifically for the ensemble. The ensemble is known for its virtuosic performances and its ability to bring new life to contemporary classical music. One of the highlights of Ensemble Reflektor's career was their performance at the 2013 Lucerne Festival. The ensemble performed a program of works by Ligeti, Boulez, and Lachenmann, which was met with critical acclaim. The ensemble's performance was described as "brilliant" and "dazzling" by critics, who praised the ensemble's technical skill and musicality. In 2014, Ensemble Reflektor was awarded the Echo Klassik award for their album "Transir", which featured works by Ligeti, Boulez, and Lachenmann. The album was praised for its innovative approach to contemporary classical music and its ability to showcase the virtuosity of the ensemble's members. Ensemble Reflektor has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In 2016, the ensemble performed a program of works by Boulez and Widmann with the Berlin Philharmonic, which was conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. The performance was described as "stunning" and "mesmerizing" by critics, who praised the ensemble's ability to bring new life to contemporary classical music. In addition to their performances, Ensemble Reflektor is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with young musicians and composers through workshops and masterclasses, and has also performed in schools and community centers.
