His parents encouraged him to pursue his passion for music, and he began taking formal lessons when he was six years old. Stohr's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He won his first piano competition when he was just eight years old and went on to win several more competitions throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 1966, Stohr enrolled at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Wilhelm Kempff. Kempff recognized Stohr's talent and took him under his wing, mentoring him and helping him to develop his skills as a pianist.
