Period:ClassicalRomanticGenre:ChamberPiero Farulli was an Italian violist and chamber musician who was born on January 11, 1915, in Florence, Italy. He was the son of a violinist and began his musical studies at a young age. Farulli studied at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence, where he was a student of violist Bruno Giuranna. He later studied with William Primrose in London and with Maurice Vieux in Paris. Farulli began his professional career as a violist in the 1930s, performing with various orchestras in Italy. In 1941, he joined the Quartetto Italiano, a renowned string quartet that was founded in 1945. Farulli played viola in the quartet for over 40 years, until its dissolution in 1980. The Quartetto Italiano was known for its interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, among others. The quartet performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and made numerous recordings. Farulli was also a respected chamber music coach and teacher. He taught at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He was also a visiting professor at the Juilliard School in New York City. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as chamber musicians and soloists. Farulli was known for his warm, rich tone and his expressive playing. He was a master of the viola repertoire, and his performances were marked by a deep understanding of the music he played. He was also known for his collaborative spirit, and his ability to work closely with other musicians to create a cohesive ensemble sound. Throughout his career, Farulli received numerous awards and honors. In 1952, he was awarded the Viotti Prize for his performances with the Quartetto Italiano. In 1962, he was awarded the Premio della Critica Musicale Italiana for his contributions to Italian music. In 1975, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. Farulli continued to perform and teach until his death on April 26, 1998, in Florence, Italy. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest violists and chamber musicians of the 20th century. His recordings with the Quartetto Italiano continue to be celebrated for their beauty and artistry, and his influence as a teacher and coach can still be felt in the world of chamber music today.More....
