Artist Info
Martin Kuuskmann is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a virtuoso bassoonist. Born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1976, Kuuskmann grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that he would develop a love for music at a young age. Kuuskmann began playing the bassoon when he was just 11 years old. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument and began studying with some of the best teachers in Estonia. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing with professional orchestras and winning awards at international competitions. In 1994, Kuuskmann moved to the United States to continue his studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He studied with some of the most respected bassoonists in the world, including Frank Morelli and Kim Laskowski. During his time at the Manhattan School of Music, Kuuskmann won several awards and was a finalist in the prestigious Concert Artists Guild International Competition. After graduating from the Manhattan School of Music in 1998, Kuuskmann began his professional career as a bassoonist. He quickly established himself as one of the most talented and versatile bassoonists in the world, performing with some of the best orchestras and chamber ensembles in the United States and Europe. One of the highlights of Kuuskmann's career came in 2002 when he was invited to perform at the Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival in New York City. He performed Mozart's Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra to critical acclaim. The New York Times called his performance "superb" and praised his "rich, warm tone and impeccable technique." Kuuskmann has also been a champion of contemporary music throughout his career. He has premiered numerous works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Jennifer Higdon, and Steve Reich. In 2006, he premiered a concerto for bassoon and orchestra by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Kuuskmann is also a respected teacher and mentor. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Michigan, and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, inspiring the next generation of bassoonists. Throughout his career, Kuuskmann has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a bassoonist. In 2003, he was awarded the Estonian Cultural Endowment Prize for Music, one of the highest honors in Estonian culture. In 2010, he was awarded the Order of the White Star, one of Estonia's highest civilian honors, for his contributions to Estonian culture. Today, Kuuskmann continues to perform and teach around the world. He is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, and his recordings have received critical acclaim. He remains committed to promoting the bassoon as a solo instrument and to expanding the repertoire for the instrument through his collaborations with contemporary composers.More....
