He was the son of a Welsh Congregationalist minister, and his mother was a talented pianist. Harry showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Harry's family moved to London when he was ten years old, and he continued his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music. He studied piano, composition, and conducting and won several prizes for his performances.
