Jacques Loussier was a French pianist and composer who was born on October 26, 1934, in Angers, France. He was the son of a physician and a pharmacist, and his parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Loussier began playing the piano at the age of ten and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. In 1950, Loussier moved to Paris to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. He studied under the renowned pianist Yvonne Lefébure and graduated with a first prize in piano in 1955. After graduation, Loussier began performing in jazz clubs in Paris, where he developed a unique style that blended classical music with jazz improvisation. In 1959, Loussier formed the Jacques Loussier Trio with bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros. The trio's unique sound, which combined jazz improvisation with classical music, quickly gained popularity in France and beyond. In 1960, the trio released their first album, Play Bach No. 1, which featured jazz interpretations of Bach's music. The album was a commercial success and launched the trio to international fame. Over the next few years, the Jacques Loussier Trio released several more albums in the Play Bach series, including Play Bach No. 2, Play Bach No. 3, and Play Bach No. 4. The albums featured jazz interpretations of Bach's music, as well as original compositions by Loussier. The trio's unique sound and innovative approach to classical music earned them critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. In addition to his work with the Jacques Loussier Trio, Loussier also composed music for film and television. He composed the score for the 1962 film The Seven Deadly Sins, as well as the theme music for the French television series Thierry la Fronde. Loussier also collaborated with other musicians, including violinist Stéphane Grappelli and guitarist Barney Kessel. Throughout his career, Loussier continued to push the boundaries of classical music and jazz. He experimented with different musical styles and genres, incorporating elements of rock, pop, and world music into his compositions. He also continued to perform and record with the Jacques Loussier Trio, releasing albums such as The Best of Play Bach and Encore Play Bach. In recognition of his contributions to music, Loussier received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, one of France's highest honors. In 2002, he received the German Jazz Trophy for Lifetime Achievement, and in 2008, he was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for his contributions to music. Despite his success and acclaim, Loussier remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and record music until his death on March 5, 2019, at the age of 84. His legacy as a pioneering musician and composer continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
