Born in 1969 in New York City, Mermagen grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Mermagen began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned cellists, including David Soyer, Timothy Eddy, and Bernard Greenhouse. He also attended the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music.
