The Lithuania RTV Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Vilnius, Lithuania. The orchestra was founded in 1940 as the Lithuanian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in the Baltic region. The orchestra's founding can be traced back to the establishment of the Lithuanian Radio in 1926. The radio station quickly became a cultural hub for the country, broadcasting a wide range of music programs and live performances. In 1940, the Lithuanian Radio Symphony Orchestra was established as the station's resident orchestra, with the aim of providing high-quality live music for radio broadcasts. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of challenges, including the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent Soviet occupation of Lithuania. Despite these difficulties, the orchestra continued to perform and record, and gradually gained a reputation as one of the finest orchestras in the region. Over the years, the Lithuania RTV Symphony Orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Juozas Domarkas, Vytautas Lukocius, and Robertas Servenikas. The orchestra's current principal conductor is Modestas Pitrenas, who has been with the ensemble since 2015. One of the orchestra's most notable achievements came in 1990, when it became the first Lithuanian orchestra to perform at the prestigious Proms festival in London. The orchestra's performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 was met with critical acclaim, and helped to raise the profile of classical music in Lithuania. In addition to its international performances, the Lithuania RTV Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings. The orchestra has released numerous albums over the years, including a highly-regarded series of recordings of the music of Lithuanian composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. The orchestra has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, in recognition of its contributions to the country's cultural heritage. The orchestra has also been recognized by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, which has named it a "national treasure" and provided funding for its activities. Today, the Lithuania RTV Symphony Orchestra continues to be a vital part of the country's cultural landscape. The ensemble performs regularly in Vilnius and throughout Lithuania, and has also toured extensively throughout Europe and beyond. With its commitment to excellence and its dedication to promoting the music of Lithuania and beyond, the orchestra is sure to remain a fixture of the classical music world for years to come.More....
