The Indianapolis Children's Choir (ICC) is a world-renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their angelic voices for over three decades. Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, the ICC has grown to become one of the most respected children's choirs in the world, with a reputation for excellence in performance and education. The birth of the ICC can be traced back to the early 1980s when Henry Leck, a music educator and conductor, began to notice a lack of quality children's choirs in the Indianapolis area. Leck, who had previously founded the Indianapolis Youth Chorale, saw an opportunity to create a new choir that would provide children with a high-quality music education and performance experience. In 1986, Leck founded the Indianapolis Children's Choir with just 100 singers. The choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and within a few years, the ICC had grown to over 500 singers, ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old. One of the highlights of the ICC's early years was their performance at the 1990 International Children's Choir Festival in Canterbury, England. The choir was one of only six choirs from around the world to be invited to perform at the festival, and their performance was met with critical acclaim. Over the years, the ICC has continued to grow and expand, adding new choirs and programs to their repertoire. Today, the choir consists of over 1,000 singers, divided into 13 different choirs based on age and skill level. One of the ICC's most notable achievements was their performance at the 2002 World Choir Games in Busan, South Korea. The choir competed against over 300 choirs from around the world and won two gold medals, one for their performance in the Children's Choir category and one for their performance in the Youth Choir category. In addition to their success at international competitions, the ICC has also performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln Center. The choir has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and composers, including John Williams, Eric Whitacre, and Morten Lauridsen. One of the ICC's most beloved traditions is their annual holiday concert, which has become a staple of the Indianapolis music scene. The concert, which features all 13 choirs performing a mix of classical and contemporary holiday music, has been attended by thousands of people each year and has become a cherished holiday tradition for many families in the Indianapolis area. In addition to their performance schedule, the ICC is also committed to providing high-quality music education to children in the Indianapolis area. The choir offers a variety of programs, including after-school choirs, summer camps, and music education workshops for teachers. The ICC's commitment to music education has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2016, the choir was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, which is the highest honor given to youth arts programs in the United States. The award recognized the ICC's commitment to providing high-quality music education to children from all backgrounds and their dedication to promoting cultural understanding through music.
