The Simon Mayr Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 30 years. The choir was founded in 1987 by Franz Hauk, a German conductor and musicologist, who named it after the famous composer Johann Simon Mayr. Johann Simon Mayr was a prolific composer of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, who was known for his operas, oratorios, and sacred music. He was born in Mendorf, Bavaria, in 1763, and began his musical education at a young age. He studied with several prominent composers of the time, including Johann Nepomuk Kalcher and Georg Joseph Vogler, and eventually became a respected musician in his own right. Mayr's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was often compared to his contemporary, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. However, his works fell out of favor after his death in 1845, and it wasn't until the 20th century that his music began to be rediscovered and appreciated once again. Franz Hauk, who had a deep admiration for Mayr's music, founded the Simon Mayr Choir with the goal of promoting and performing his works. The choir quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances, and they soon began to expand their repertoire to include other composers of the classical era. Over the years, the Simon Mayr Choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Musikverein in Vienna. They have also collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the highlights of the choir's career was their performance of Mayr's oratorio "David in spelunca Engaddi" at the Salzburg Festival in 1997. The performance was widely praised by critics, who lauded the choir's "impeccable technique" and "sensitive interpretation" of the work. In addition to their performances, the Simon Mayr Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2005, they were awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize for their contributions to the arts, and in 2013, they were named the "Choir of the Year" by the German music magazine "Opernwelt."
