Jean Laurendeau was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on June 12, 1949, in Montreal, Canada. From a young age, Laurendeau showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 10 and quickly developed a talent for the instrument. Laurendeau's musical education began at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, where he studied under the guidance of renowned clarinetist, Robert Marcellus. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with David Weber and Joseph Allard. Laurendeau's talent and dedication to his craft quickly became evident, and he began to receive recognition for his performances. In 1972, he won the prestigious Prix d'Europe, which allowed him to study in Europe for a year. During this time, he studied with some of the most renowned clarinetists in the world, including Hans Deinzer and Karl Leister. Upon his return to Canada, Laurendeau began to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many of the leading orchestras in Canada, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He also performed extensively as a chamber musician, collaborating with some of the most renowned musicians of his time. One of the highlights of Laurendeau's career was his performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 1984. The performance was widely acclaimed, and Laurendeau's interpretation of the piece was praised for its sensitivity and musicality. Laurendeau was also a dedicated teacher, and he held teaching positions at several institutions throughout his career. He was a professor of clarinet at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, the University of Montreal, and the University of Ottawa. He was also a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at universities and music schools throughout North America and Europe. In addition to his performances and teaching, Laurendeau was also an active recording artist. He recorded several albums throughout his career, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Laurendeau's contributions to the world of music were widely recognized, and he received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the highest honors in the country. He was also awarded the Prix Denise-Pelletier, the highest honor for the arts in Quebec, in 1995. Sadly, Laurendeau's career was cut short when he passed away in 1996 at the age of 47.
