Anca Nicolau is a Romanian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and musical interpretations. Born on December 12, 1985, in Bucharest, Romania, Nicolau showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents, both music lovers, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Nicolau's early musical education was at the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, where she studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue, Viniciu Moroianu. She then went on to study at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. During her studies, Nicolau participated in numerous national and international competitions, winning several awards and distinctions. In 2008, Nicolau was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Christopher Elton and Joanna MacGregor. Her time at the Royal Academy was a turning point in her career, as she was exposed to a wider range of musical styles and had the opportunity to perform in some of London's most prestigious concert halls. Since then, Nicolau has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, collaborating with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She has also been a frequent guest at international music festivals, including the George Enescu Festival in Romania, the Chopin Festival in Poland, and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York. Nicolau's repertoire is vast and diverse, ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary music. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the music of Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, and George Enescu, as well as for her performances of lesser-known works by Romanian composers. One of Nicolau's most notable performances was at the 2010 George Enescu Festival, where she performed Enescu's Piano Sonata No. 3 in D major, Op. 24. Her performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it cemented her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Enescu's music. Nicolau has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2007, she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Sinaia, Romania, and in 2011, she was awarded the George Enescu Prize by the Romanian Ministry of Culture. In 2015, she was named a Steinway Artist, joining a select group of pianists who are recognized for their excellence in performance and dedication to the art of piano playing. In addition to her performing career, Nicolau is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, and she is currently a professor of piano at the National University of Music in Bucharest. Overall, Anca Nicolau is a highly accomplished and respected pianist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
