Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist, so it was natural for Louise to develop an interest in music from a young age. Louise began playing the harp at the age of 12, and by the time she was 16, she had already won several awards for her performances. She studied under the guidance of renowned harpists, including Marcel Grandjany and Carlos Salzedo, and honed her skills to become one of the most accomplished harpists of her time. In 1946, Louise joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as their principal harpist, a position she held for over 40 years. During her tenure with the orchestra, she performed in numerous concerts and toured extensively across Australia and internationally. She also played with other orchestras, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Louise was known for her exceptional technique and musicality, and her performances were always a delight to watch. She was particularly renowned for her interpretation of French music, and her recordings of works by Debussy, Ravel, and Fauré are considered some of the best in the world. In addition to her work with orchestras, Louise was also a prolific soloist and chamber musician. She performed with some of the most renowned musicians of her time, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and cellist Jacqueline du Pré. She also formed her own ensemble, the Louise Johnson Harp Ensemble, which performed a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary. Throughout her career, Louise received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the field of classical music. In 1975, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, and in 1988, she was made a Member of the Order of Australia. She was also awarded the Australian Music Centre's Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award in 1992. Louise retired from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1987 but continued to perform and teach until her death in 2012. In conclusion, Louise Johnson was a trailblazer in the field of classical music and a true icon of the harp.
