Garrett Sholdice is a contemporary classical music composer hailing from Dublin, Ireland. Born in 1983, Sholdice grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He went on to study music at Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2005 and a Master of Music degree in 2007. Sholdice's early compositions were heavily influenced by the minimalist and post-minimalist movements of the late 20th century, particularly the works of composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. However, as he continued to develop his own style, he began to incorporate a wider range of influences, including traditional Irish music, jazz, and contemporary art music. One of Sholdice's most notable works is his 2011 composition "A Map of the Winds," which was commissioned by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival. The piece is a meditation on the changing winds of the Irish landscape, and features a complex interplay of strings, winds, and percussion. Another significant work by Sholdice is his 2014 composition "The Narrow Road to the Deep North," which was commissioned by the Crash Ensemble and premiered at the New Music Dublin festival. The piece is inspired by the haiku poetry of the Japanese poet Basho, and features a delicate and intricate interplay of piano, percussion, and electronics. In addition to his work as a composer, Sholdice is also a co-founder and artistic director of the Dublin-based contemporary music ensemble, Ergodos. The group has gained a reputation for its innovative and boundary-pushing performances, and has collaborated with a wide range of artists and musicians from around the world. Overall, Garrett Sholdice is a highly respected and influential figure in the contemporary classical music scene. His work is characterized by a deep sensitivity to the natural world, as well as a willingness to experiment with a wide range of musical styles and techniques. As he continues to develop his craft, it is likely that he will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of classical music.
