He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Lino began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public, and his talent was recognized by many. In 1950, Lino enrolled at the Milan Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Carlo Zecchi. After completing his studies at the Milan Conservatory, Lino began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation, and his performances were eagerly anticipated by audiences around the world. One of the highlights of Lino's career was his performance at the 1958 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The competition was one of the most prestigious in the world, and Lino was one of only a handful of non-Soviet pianists to be invited to compete. Despite the intense competition, Lino's performance was outstanding, and he was awarded the second prize. Over the years, Lino continued to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. He also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his performances, Lino was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. He was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of Italy's most prestigious music institutions.
