Role:Composer Conductor PerformerBirth:1929Alcides Lanza was a renowned classical music composer, pianist, and educator. He was born on September 7, 1929, in Rosario, Argentina. Lanza's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began studying piano at the age of six and later went on to study composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires. In 1955, Lanza moved to Italy to study with Luigi Dallapiccola, a prominent composer and teacher. He also studied with other notable composers such as Bruno Maderna and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Lanza's time in Italy was a formative period in his career, and he was heavily influenced by the avant-garde music scene there. In 1965, Lanza moved to Canada and became a professor of composition at the University of Toronto. He remained there until his retirement in 1994. During his time at the university, Lanza was a highly respected teacher and mentor to many young composers. Lanza's music is characterized by its experimental and avant-garde nature. He was known for his use of unconventional techniques and instruments, such as prepared piano and electronic music. His compositions often explored themes of social and political commentary, and he was particularly interested in the intersection of music and technology. One of Lanza's most notable works is his opera "The Deserted Churchyards," which premiered in 1972. The opera is a powerful commentary on the political situation in Argentina at the time, and it features a mix of traditional and experimental musical elements. The opera was well-received by critics and helped establish Lanza as a major figure in the contemporary music scene. Another notable work by Lanza is his "Episodes," a series of pieces for prepared piano. The pieces are characterized by their use of unconventional techniques, such as plucking the strings of the piano and using objects to alter the sound of the instrument. The "Episodes" are considered to be some of Lanza's most innovative and influential works. Throughout his career, Lanza received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a member of the Canadian Music Centre. Lanza continued to compose and perform music until his death on March 15, 2019, at the age of 89. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.More....
