In 1968, Elka was accepted into the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where she continued her studies in piano performance. She was a dedicated student and spent countless hours practicing and perfecting her craft. Her hard work paid off, and she graduated with honors in 1973. After graduation, Elka began her professional career as a concert pianist. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented and passionate performer, and she was in high demand for concerts and recitals. Her performances were known for their technical precision and emotional depth, and she quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists in Bulgaria. In 1976, Elka won the prestigious Dimitar Nenov Piano Competition, which was named after one of Bulgaria's most famous composers. The competition was a major milestone in her career, and it helped to establish her as a leading pianist in Bulgaria. Over the next few years, Elka continued to perform in concerts and recitals throughout Bulgaria and Europe. In 1981, Elka was invited to perform at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. She performed brilliantly, and she was awarded third prize in the competition. The Chopin competition was a major turning point in Elka's career. It brought her international recognition and helped to establish her as one of the world's leading pianists.
