Allie Wrubel was an American composer and songwriter who was born on July 15, 1905, in New York City. He was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Wrubel began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Wrubel attended the City College of New York, where he studied music theory and composition. After graduating, he began working as a pianist and arranger for various bands and orchestras. In the 1930s, he moved to Hollywood to work in the film industry. Wrubel's first major success as a composer came in 1934 when he wrote the song "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" for the Warner Bros. cartoon series Looney Tunes. The song became a hit and has since become a classic piece of American popular culture. Wrubel went on to write many more songs for films and television shows, including "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from the Disney film Song of the South, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1947. In addition to his work in film and television, Wrubel also wrote many popular songs that were recorded by some of the biggest names in music. His songs were performed by artists such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. Some of his most famous songs include "Gone with the Wind," "I Can Dream, Can't I?," and "It's a Wonderful World." Wrubel's music was known for its catchy melodies and clever lyrics. He had a talent for writing songs that were both fun and meaningful, and his music has remained popular long after his death. Wrubel died on December 13, 1973, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 68. Despite his success as a composer, Wrubel was known for his modesty and humility. He once said, "I'm just a guy who writes songs. I don't think of myself as a great composer or anything like that. I just try to write music that people will enjoy." Wrubel's legacy as a composer and songwriter continues to live on today. His music has been featured in countless films, television shows, and commercials, and his songs are still performed by musicians all over the world. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, and his contributions to American music will always be remembered.
