Mkhitar Ayrivanetsi was a prominent Armenian composer of classical music who lived during the 14th century. He was born in the village of Ayrivan in the province of Vaspurakan, which is now located in modern-day Turkey. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in the monasteries of the Armenian Church. Ayrivanetsi is best known for his compositions of Armenian sacred music, which were heavily influenced by the liturgical traditions of the Armenian Church. His works were characterized by their intricate polyphonic harmonies and their use of traditional Armenian melodies and modes. One of Ayrivanetsi's most famous works is his "Sharakan," which is a type of Armenian hymn that is sung during the liturgy. His "Sharakan" compositions were highly regarded for their beauty and complexity, and they were widely performed throughout the Armenian Church. In addition to his sacred music, Ayrivanetsi also composed secular music, including songs and instrumental pieces. However, very few of these works have survived to the present day. Ayrivanetsi's music was highly influential in the development of Armenian classical music, and his compositions continue to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world. His legacy has also been celebrated through the establishment of the Mkhitar Ayrivanetsi Music School in Yerevan, Armenia, which is dedicated to the study and performance of Armenian classical music. Despite the fact that Ayrivanetsi lived over 600 years ago, his music remains an important part of Armenian cultural heritage and continues to inspire musicians and audiences alike.
