He was the son of a cantor and grew up in a musical family. Gorin began singing in his father's choir at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He received his formal music education at the Kiev Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned Ukrainian baritone, Vladimir Kastorsky. In 1924, Gorin made his professional debut as a soloist with the Kiev Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. In 1929, he was invited to perform at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he received critical acclaim for his performance in the role of Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen. In 1930, Gorin immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. He made his American debut in 1931 at the Metropolitan Opera, where he performed the role of Amonasro in Verdi's Aida. He quickly became a favorite among audiences and critics alike, and his career took off. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Gorin performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and La Scala in Milan. He was known for his powerful voice, dramatic intensity, and commanding stage presence. Some of his most famous roles included Rigoletto, Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca, and the title role in Verdi's Falstaff. In addition to his opera career, Gorin was also a successful concert singer. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was particularly known for his performances of Russian songs and romances, which he sang with great emotion and sensitivity. Gorin was also a dedicated voice teacher and taught at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He was known for his rigorous and demanding teaching style, but his students admired him for his passion and dedication to the art of singing. Some of his most famous students included the soprano Leontyne Price and the baritone Sherrill Milnes. Throughout his career, Gorin received many awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1944, he was awarded the Presidential Certificate of Merit by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his work entertaining American troops during World War II. In 1950, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the Italian government for his contributions to Italian culture. He was also a recipient of the National Opera Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. Gorin continued to perform and teach until his death on March 26, 1982, in La Jolla, California. He was remembered as one of the greatest baritones of his generation and a true master of the art of singing.
