Robert H. Redhead was a renowned composer of classical music, particularly in the genre of brass band music. He was born on July 1, 1936, in the town of Bristol, England. Redhead grew up in a musical family, with his father being a Salvation Army bandmaster and his mother a singer. He began playing the cornet at a young age and quickly showed a talent for music. Redhead's musical education began at the Bristol Citadel Salvation Army, where he played in the band and received instruction from his father. He later attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition under Alan Bush. During his time at the academy, Redhead also played in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. After completing his studies, Redhead began his career as a composer and arranger. He worked for the Salvation Army's music department, where he wrote and arranged music for brass bands and other ensembles. He also served as the bandmaster of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army from 1966 to 1975. Redhead's compositions and arrangements quickly gained recognition in the brass band world. His works were known for their technical difficulty and musical complexity, as well as their emotional depth and spiritual themes. Some of his most famous works include "The Light of the World," "The Holy War," and "The Kingdom Triumphant." In addition to his work in the brass band world, Redhead also composed music for other ensembles, including orchestras and choirs. He wrote several works for the London Symphony Orchestra, including "The Prodigal" and "The Pilgrim's Progress." He also composed choral works, such as "The Beatitudes" and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You." Throughout his career, Redhead received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1993 for his services to music, and he was also made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. In 2002, he was awarded the International Award of Merit in the Arts by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. Redhead continued to compose and arrange music until his death on August 24, 2018, at the age of 82. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded by brass bands and other ensembles around the world. His contributions to the brass band genre have been particularly significant, and his works are considered some of the most important and influential in the history of the genre.
